Chinese Character for Bright 囧
There’s an ancient Chinese character ‘Jiong’ which stands for ‘bright’. If you look closely at Jiong 囧 it does look like an emoticon. If you try searching for this Chinese character, I would dare say that you won’t be able to find it in your contemporary Chinese dictionary. Jiong originally meant a patterned window, or ‘as bright as the light peering from outside the window’. Put simply, Jiong actually meant ‘bright’.
